Batsheva Dance Company was founded in Israel in 1964. Since 1998 the Weil family is a long term partner, supporting the salaries of Batsheva dancers. A close friendship and collaboration that has strengthened the company’s uncompromising quality and made Batsheva Dance Company one of the leading contemporary companies in the world.
Batsheva Dance Company, is one of the foremost contemporary dance companies in the world, originally founded by Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild and Martha Graham in 1964. Ohad Naharin, took over as artistic director in 1990. Ohad is with his distinctive choreographic voice exploring the boundaries between art and performance. He is the originator of the innovative movement language, Gaga, which have revolutionized the company’s training, and emerged as a growing international force in the larger field of movement practices for both dancers and non-dancers. In 2022 Lior Avizoor took on the role of the Batsheva Dance Company Artistic Director, Lior is a dancer, teacher, curator, and researcher in the field of dance. Ohad is since 2017 House Choreographer of Batsheva.
Based in Tel Aviv, the company travels continually, performing all over the world, and has established a junior ensemble to promote a new generation of choreographers and dancers, but also to introduce children to dance. The company consists of 34 dancers from Israel and abroad. Batsheva maintains an extensive performance schedule locally and internationally with over 250 performances and over 75,000 spectators per year. It has become an institution with world class dancers and choreography – and at the same time a force for the experimental, or even more radical, development of new styles, choreographies and movements.
